How Your Dog’s Hair Is Helping Save Michigan’s Waters
Turning Dog Hair Into Environmental Heroes
Did you know your dog’s hair can help save the environment? At The Howling Hounds, I’m taking grooming to the next level by recycling every bit of dog hair from my sessions and transforming it into oil booms—special tools that clean up oil spills in our waterways.
How It Works
After each grooming session, I collect the hair and use it to create oil booms. These booms are long tubes packed with dog hair, which is excellent at absorbing oil while repelling water. Once the booms are ready, I donate them to local water cleanup crews, who use them to protect Michigan’s beautiful lakes, rivers, and streams from oil spills.
Why Dog Hair?
Dog hair might seem like an unusual tool, but it’s surprisingly effective at soaking up oil! Instead of letting all that hair go to waste, I give it a second life that directly benefits the environment. It’s a simple, sustainable solution to a big problem, and I’m so proud that The Howling Hounds gets to be part of it.
Every Groom Helps the Planet
No matter how big or small, every dog I groom contributes to this mission. Whether your pup is shedding buckets or just needs a quick trim, their hair will go on to help keep Michigan’s waters clean. It’s one more way your visit to The Howling Hounds makes an impact!
Why This Matters
Michigan is home to some of the most incredible natural waterways in the world, and they deserve to be protected. By making and donating these oil booms, I’m helping to keep our waters safe for wildlife and future generations. Together, we can make a real difference—one grooming session and one oil boom at a time.
How You Can Help
If you’re as passionate about protecting the environment as I am, consider supporting local water cleanup organizations or spreading the word about creative recycling efforts like this one. And, of course, every appointment at The Howling Hounds helps fuel this mission!
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. It’s amazing to think that, together with your dogs, we’re creating cleaner, safer waterways for everyone to enjoy.
With love and gratitude,
Jennie
